My first influence came to me in about 1992, when I stumbled upon a television program that featured two photographers explaining how to shoot a waterfall. I was fascinated by the fact that these two guys were being paid to do what they obviously thoroughly enjoyed doing. That was my “AHA!” moment. I knew right then and there that I wanted to – NO! – I HAD to be a landscape / nature photographer! My first well-known, professional influence was Art Wolfe. Other favorites are Galen Rowell, Peter Lik and John Fielder, another, albeit famous Coloradan.

Currently, I am focusing on Colorado State Parks & Rocky Mountain National Park, as well as other local areas. My ultimate goal is to shoot Colorado and her neighboring states, including New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho & Montana.
When I look at a gorgeous landscape image, it transports me to that location, giving me respite from a hectic day. It reminds me of the tranquil beauty Mother Nature has to offer, and that there is so much more to life than we sometimes remember, when caught up in the daily grind. My goal is to share the beautiful landscapes I photograph with you, so that you can enjoy that same feeling.

Focusing On Colorado

I'm Tom Potter, a Colorado landscape and
nature photographer.

I was born and raised in The Bronx, New York,
and lived in Brooklyn for 13 years,
till my wife and I moved to the scenic state of
Colorado, in 1996.

I live in Aurora, Colorado, a city just 8 miles West
of Denver. I am married to an amazing woman,
my best friend, Barbara, and our beautiful
daughter Jenny is the absolute joy of our lives. Our 2 dogs
and 5 cats are a testament to our love of animals.

My first influence came to me in 1992, when I
watched a television program that featured two nature
photographers demonstrating how to photograph a
waterfall. I was fascinated by the fact that these two
guys were being paid to do what they loved to do. The
way I saw it, they were paid not to do a job, but to
have fun! It actually takes a tremendous amount of work to be a
successful photographer, but work that's a
lot of fun and incredibly satisfying.
That was my “Aha!” moment. I knew right then and
there that I wanted to – No! – I Had to be a nature
photographer!

My first professional influence was Art Wolfe.
Other favorites include Galen Rowell, Peter Lik,
Mark Gray, and two fellow Coloradans, Andy Cook
and John Fielder.

I very much enjoy everything about nature
photography, from planning my outings,
prepping my gear, being outdoors, carefully
studying a scene, to processing and displaying the
resulting images. Most importantly, I love that
something I created can bring joy into someone
else's life, making them feel good and putting a
smile on their face. That is always my ultimate
goal.
